Story:
Siberian gulag escapees walk 4,000 miles to freedom in India. In 1941, three men tried to escape from Communist Russia, escaping a Siberian gulag. The film tells the story of him and the four others who escape with him and a teenage girl who joins them on the flight. The natural leader of the group is Janusz, a Pole who is condemned by accusations of wife torture, spent most of his youth outdoors, and knows how to live in the woods. They escape under cover of a blizzard: a sleazy American, a Russian thug, a comical accountant, a pastry chef who draws, a priest, and a Pole with night blindness. During their journey to freedom, they face freezing nights, lack of food and water, mosquitoes, an endless desert, the Himalayas, as well as many moral and ethical dilemmas.
